International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) 2025
The International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia, or IDAHOBIT, takes place on the 17th May with the date specifically chosen to commemorate the World Health Organization's decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder. Originally known as the International Day Against Homophobia when first celebrated in 2005, it expanded to cover transphobia in 2009 and biphobia in 2015. The day serves as an opportunity to raise awareness of the treatment of LGBTQ+ people worldwide, including the ongoing repression and discrimination, as well as a chance to come together to drive positive change going forward.
This year, acknowledging IDAHOBIT feels more urgent than ever as we have seen significant pushback against queer and especially trans rights here in the UK. ILGA Europe have recently updated their Rainbow Europe Map for 2025 to show the human rights situation across Europe.
The UK has “dropped six places in ILGA-Europe’s Rainbow Map, as Hungary and Georgia also register steep falls following anti-LGBTI legislation. The data highlights how rollbacks on LGBTI human rights are part of a broader erosion of democratic protections across Europe.”
Katrin Hugendubel, Advocacy Director, ILGA-Europe commented: “Moves in the UK, Hungary, Georgia and beyond signal not just isolated regressions, but a coordinated global backlash aimed at erasing LGBTI rights, cynically framed as the defence of tradition or public stability, but in reality designed to entrench discrimination and suppress dissent.”
This makes the theme for 2025, ‘The Power of Communities,’ all the more important as we know that we are stronger when we stand together. OMG is here for all the members of our wonderful community; we see you, we are here for you, and we want you to feel safe with us.
